PITS

Public Information Trust System

The Public Information Trust System (PITS) is a proof-of-concept research project developed in collaboration with BRIN, Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency, as the main stakeholder. The project is part of a broader BRIN research initiative focused on improving trust, transparency, and provenance in digital public communication.

PITS explores how blockchain-supported integrity verification can help verify whether published digital information has remained unchanged over time. The system combines cryptographic hashing, provenance tracking, and blockchain-based trust anchoring within a hybrid architecture, without storing sensitive content directly on-chain.

The project also investigates how these verification workflows can support AI-enabled communication systems and contribute to more transparent and trustworthy public information infrastructures.

The PITS prototype was developed using a modular hybrid architecture consisting of frontend, backend, authentication, database, and blockchain integration layers.

The frontend was implemented as a web-based interface responsible for user interaction, document uploads, and verification workflows. Backend services handled authentication validation, cryptographic hashing, database communication, and blockchain interaction. Authentication and session management were implemented using Keycloak and token-based verification.

For integrity verification, uploaded documents are processed through cryptographic hashing mechanisms before integrity-related metadata and transaction references are registered through a blockchain-supported trust anchoring layer. The system additionally includes provenance registration, verification workflows, and database-supported lookup functionality.

The project was developed using collaborative version control workflows, containerized development environments, and automated code quality validation through linting and testing procedures.
